Volumio OS: Powering Innovation and Speed in the High-End Audio Market
How Ferrum’s WANDLA 2.0.0 Firmware Update Showcases the Flexibility and Strength of the Volumio Ecosystem

In the fast-moving world of high-end audio, innovation is not only about exceptional sound quality—it’s about flexibility, speed to market, and creating products that surprise and delight. For brands like Ferrum, that’s exactly what Volumio OS brings to the table: an open, reliable platform that allows forward-thinking manufacturers to develop next-generation features faster than ever before.

At the upcoming High End Munich 2025 show, Ferrum will unveil WANDLA 2.0.0, a groundbreaking firmware update for its award-winning family of DACs. The highlight? Ferrum Streaming Control Technology (FSCT), a feature made possible in part by the openness and extensibility of the Volumio platform.

Ferrum Streaming Control Technology: A Glimpse Into the Future of Integrated Audio

With FSCT, Ferrum has reimagined what a DAC can do. Thanks to the 2.0.0 firmware update, WANDLA DACs can now control your streaming setup directly from the unit’s touchscreen and remote control. You get play/pause/skip commands and artist and track info displayed in real time—right from the device itself.

Here’s where Volumio OS comes in: FSCT was built to be fully compatible with Volumio’s plugin and control architecture, allowing seamless interaction between the WANDLA DAC and a Volumio-powered streamer. This wasn’t an afterthought—it was made possible because Volumio’s architecture is partner-friendly, modular, and built for this kind of innovation.

“The beauty of FSCT is that WANDLA can show information of the artist, title, and progress bar from any device running macOS, Windows, or the Volumio OS plugin.”

The Power of an Open Ecosystem

Volumio has spent years refining its software to serve the most demanding audio use cases. That experience, especially in the high-end market, means manufacturers can rely on Volumio as a Grade-A software foundation for their own products.

When Ferrum needed a robust platform that could keep up with their fast pace of innovation and demanding customer base, Volumio was the obvious choice. Here’s why:

  • Speed to Market: Volumio OS allowed Ferrum to implement FSCT and release it across their full WANDLA product family without building a streaming interface from scratch.
  • Hardware Flexibility: Whether using Raspberry Pi boards, CM modules, or custom hardware, Volumio adapts and performs with reliability.
  • Extensible Architecture: Volumio plugins enabled Ferrum to tailor features specifically for their use case while preserving compatibility with the wider Volumio ecosystem.
  • Proven Track Record: Trusted by audiophiles, integrators, and OEMs around the world, Volumio is already a mainstay in high-end audio—Ferrum’s adoption just reinforces that.

A Win-Win for Brands and Users Alike

For Ferrum, the payoff is enormous. Their users now get smarter, more intuitive control of their streaming experience—without needing to switch apps, fumble for phones, or look at multiple screens. The remote works. The screen shows everything. The experience is fluid.

For Volumio, it’s further proof that open platforms empower creativity. Ferrum’s team didn’t need to wait on closed SDKs or jump through proprietary hoops. They had what they needed to build fast, test thoroughly, and ship confidently.

Conclusion: Volumio OS as a Launchpad for High-End Innovation

The story of Ferrum’s WANDLA 2.0.0 release is a perfect showcase of what Volumio OS was built to do: enable world-class audio manufacturers to bring advanced features to market quickly, reliably, and without compromise.

If you’re an audio brand looking to push boundaries, delight users, and move fast, Volumio is your ally. As Ferrum has shown, the future of high-end audio is not just about better sound. It’s also about better systems. And Volumio OS is the system that lets you build yours.

The post Introducing Motivo: our flagship Streamer, Transport and Headphone Amp appeared first on Volumio.

]]>
Why do we all love music? Why do we put so much effort into making sure we get the best gear for our listening sessions? Why is music such an important part of our lives?

There must be a meaning to all of it. There must be. This was the foundational question we started with when conceptualizing Motivo. Motivo means just that: “meaning” in Italian.

Enjoying music involves multiple senses, aesthetic conditions, physical connection and emotional communication. We wanted to embody all of that in what we believe is the ultimate music enjoyment machine.

Welcome to Volumio Motivo: the most versatile streamer yet

Motivo is:

  • Your all-in-one audio streamer that fulfills your passion for music. We packed it with the best analog reproduction technology to deliver pristine sound quality as a streamer.
  • Your digital bridge offering the best digital interfaces for your digital system, improving even more our award-winning digital streaming technology.
  • Your premium headphone amplifier that delivers breathtaking sound quality no matter which headphone you want to pair it with.

All of that by leveraging the thing that all digital music lovers miss: a phisical connection to their music, thanks to a functionally distinctive design that allows touch interactions.

A Journey of Innovation and Community-Driven Design

The development of Motivo has been a long journey of passion, setbacks and hard work. This is the product we took most time to develop, for various reasons. But luckily, we were not alone. Right after conceptualizing what Motivo should have been, we got our beloved community involved. Some of you might remember our “Voumio Motivo Co-creation” initiative: more than 600 people provided us feedbacks on what their ultimate listening machine should have.

Motivo was designed following these feedbacks. For instance, the decision to integrate a headphone amplifier emerged clearly as the top requested feature. And this is why we added a state-of-the-art headphone section to Motivo.

Excellence in Analog Sound

Motivo can be used as a classic streamer with an integrated DAC, a power amplifier can be connected to the stereo balanced (4V RMS) or unbalanced (2V RMS) analog output. The Sabre DAC ES9038 supports sample rates up to 384kHz/32bit and DSD direct up to DSD256.

We wanted Motivo to offer unmatched sound quality and functionality. For its analog section we wanted the high-performance ESS Sabre 9038 DAC and paired with a bespoke connection which we co-developed with Amanero Technologies. Every detail of this implementation has been tweaked to offer the best achievable performance: inside Motivo there is a main linear regulator for the analog section, the same regulator that it’s used in the high-end linear power supplies. With this particular architectural choice, there is no need to use a linear power supply to power the device, because the clean 6V supply voltage is generated internally. Every sub-section of the analog part is powered by a dedicated low-noise low-dropout regulator, connected in cascade with the 6V linear regulator, to achieve the cleanest supply and the lowest noise for each element.

On top of that, the I2S and DSD signals required to feed the DAC are generated with Amanero, another Italian technology extremely popular in the Audiophile world. Thanks to the close cooperation between Volumio and Amanero, a custom version of the USB bridge has been implemented. This customized version, a combination of hardware and firmware, performs the re-clocking of the I2S and DSD signals, to achieve an even lower jitter compared to the standard version of Amanero.

Volumio OS has been equally tweaked extensively to allow the combination of hardware and software to extract every bit of performance from the system.

This combination ensures that Motivo extracts the utmost quality from its analog outputs, making it a superior choice for streamers seeking audiophile-grade sound reproduction.

The definitive transport

Furthermore, Motivo excels as a transport. We incorporated an improved version of the digital section of our award winning Rivo transport, making it our best-performing digital-transport to date.

It incorporates advanced reclocking, galvanic isolation, and separate PSU rails for each digital output. The S/PDIF coaxial and optical digital outputs are generated by the WM8804 transceiver from Wolfson/Cirrus, connected directly to the I2S bus of the System-on-Module. The coaxial output has galvanic isolation, implemented with a high-bandwidth transformer from the Japanese company Murata. The external USB ports and the internal USB port required by Amanero are connected to a USB HUB from Microchip, with proprietary technology that reconstruct the USB digital signal for improved signal integrity.

Motivo also supports I2S/DSD over HDMI allowing it to be paired with the finest DACs out there. And it’s the only transport on the market that supports all I2S protocols and pinouts: simply select your DAC model from a dropdown and Motivo will configure its I2S transmission protocol to match your DAC requirement.

Dual Headphone Amplification: Designed for Audiophiles

Recognizing the diverse needs of headphone users, Motivo features a no-compromise headphone section. It includes the flagship class-AB TPA6120A2 amplifier from Texas Instruments. The headphone amplifier is connected differentially to the Sabre DAC ES9038, to minimize the common-mode noise.

The output stage of the headphone amplifier has been fine-tuned for high-impedance headphones and low-impedance headphones, with two dedicated outputs.

Thanks to these optimizations and to the clean high-headroom supply voltage for the amplifier, it’s possible to drive any kind of headphones, even the most difficult ones, with an astonishing performance in all the frequency spectrum.

This setup ensures that every listener can experience music with clarity, depth, and precision, regardless of their headphone choice.

Ergonomic and Intuitive Design

Motivo’s design is both beautiful and functional. It’s more than just a showcase of beauty and style—it serves a dual purpose.

We wanted it to fit well atop of your main gear’s rack: its angled touchscreen display, reminiscent of top-loading CD players, offers intuitive interaction for the times you want to operate it via its touchscreen. Likewise, it’s the perfect companion for desktop Hi-Fi systems: use it as an integrated headphone setup or to drive active loudspeakers and access conveniently every feature easily with a fingertip.

The 8” multitouch IPS display brings a tactile dimension to your music exploration, allowing you to manage your music library with ease and convenience, for the times you don’t want to use a smartphone or a tablet to control it, no matter where you place it.

This thing of beauty is yet again a masterpiece from Tomas Ortiz Ferrer from Design Narratives and Jibbing. Together we have been recently won the IF Design Award for our product range.

Volumio at Its Best

We wanted Motivo to be the best possible Volumio experience yet. This is why Volumio OS has been tweaked extensively to maximize Motivo’s sound quality and usability.

Some notable features of the custom Volumio OS you will find on Motivo:

  • DAC Filter selection: The Sabre 9038 offers 6 a selection of 6 digital filters to tweak slightly its sound features. Select the one that better fits your tastes.
  • Selective standby function: you can decide Motivo’s standby behaviour. By default, Motivo will go into power-saving mode after 10 minutes of idling. You can configure this to your liking.
  • Auto Power-On: in case of power outages, you can have Motivo to turn on automatically shall you want it to.
  • HDMI I2S Mode: I2s over HDMI is a standard that each DAC manufacturer implements in a slightly different way. With Motivo you will be able to select the appropriate protocol for your DAC.
  • Status LED and Display brightness: Tune the brightness of the 8” Display and the Status LED to your liking.

Motivo requires no additional subscriptions to enjoy the full goodies of Volumio Premium, as all premium features are already included. There’s little if nothing the Motivo can’t play, which puts it above many rivals – including more expensive ones. Native DSD support is included and makes the most of the format. Logging into Qobuz, TIDAL and Spotify is a breeze, and these are as easy to navigate as your own digital music library (if you have one).

Its lovely display makes it a joy to select and browse music – bringing up artist and album info, and giving you jump-off points to discover more. It’s easy to go down a musical rabbit hole, and if you like what you discover it’s simple to create playlists and add favourites.

And there’s more:

  • Motivo supports all major streaming services: TIDAL, QOBUZ, Spotify, Radio Paradise, and all file types. ROON Ready certification is expected to land soon.
  • With our AI-powered Supersearch, you can ask Motivo what you want to listen to, for example, “A Playlist for a Party”, “Artists similar to Tame Impala”, “Jazz with Female voices” , and it will create a playlist for you.
  • Infinity Play: Hit the infinity symbol when you’re playing a track and Volumio will take you off on a musical tangent: your own personal radio station.
  • CD Playback and Ripping: connect a USB CD Drive and you can listen and copy your CDs.
  • Play to Sonos and Chromecast: want to listen to your soundbar in another room? With Motivo you can cast your music to any SONOS or Chromecast endpoint.

Our testament to musical bliss

What you will find with Motivo is more than great industrial design and cutting-edge music technology. It’s our love for music and our devotion to delivering the best music experience possible. Every Motivo, carefully assembled at Volumio HQ in downtown Florence, contains all our ingenuity, love, and passion.

We hope you will enjoy it as much as we enjoyed creating it.

Ever wondered when you are listen to your favorite music, what’s the story behind each song or album? Who are the people being acknowledged behind each record? Many other questions come to our mind when we play music, especially when we play the music we enjoy the most. We want to know who were the people behind each masterpiece we listen. Today, after a great deal of work, a new feature is added to MyVolumio users.

The Music and Artists Credit Discovery feature will allow you to answer all the questions above and more by exploring the behind the scenes of the music you listen on MyVolumio.

You can see on the video above a quick overview of how this new feature works.

The new released is available to all MyVolumio Superstar subscribers. We believe is an important addition for the audiophile, letting you find out detailed information about songs, artists or albums.

MyVolumio Music Player Discovery Feature

You can read the biography of your favorite artists.

From the biography of an artist to the story of the studio where an album was recorded, all this information will be easily accessed on the User Interface. You can access to all this data on the browse menu, or in the playback page.

MyVolumio UI Music Details

Want to know who play what? Now you can!

The Music and Artists Credit Discovery feature gives you the opportunity to learn the story of each album, the credits list, or even the instruments that were used to record from all the music on your local files. And not only for your local files, but also for MyVolumio compatible services such as Tidal, Qobuz, Spotify, and more.

The feature comes in different languages (French Version)

Adding to all these capabilities, the data can be available in the current language you use on the software, but if that’s not the case, the will appear in English.

MyVolumio feature on mobile version

You can also enjoy it on the mobile version.

And this is where we say thank you to all the contributors that made this release possible. This new addition to MyVolumio would not have been possible without the help of Jo, his creative mind came up with the idea, worked on the cloud side of it and the design, making this vision a reality.

Another important contribution we must acknowledge is to Agnes & Bence of Ollala Design Studio. For all Volumio users, this great team worked on the usability of the Volumio UI, releasing a refreshed web user interface, with many fixes. The Ollalla Design Studio team explained “In this release we designed and implemented the newest iteration of the music browser. The main goal was to provide a flatter and more content rich music experience for the users while maintaining consistency with the existing UI. This project was definitely a good start to get to know Volumio and the team. Stay tuned for the leap of developments that are coming! Volumio has a bright future and we’ll make sure to polish the UI this pearl.”

A big thanks goes as well to Chris for his great insights, code contributions and suggestions, Gkkpch, Balbuze, Ash, Giacomo, Monica, Stefano, Massimiliano and all Volumio team members which do awesome things for this project.

Last but not least, we have to thank Wikipedia and Music Brainz (to which we are proud to be Supporters) for their amazing collective work over the years. The contribution of those 2 projects to mankind wisdom and access to information is invaluable. Without them, the work we’ve done on this feature would not simply be possible. If you appreciate freedom of information, think about the fact that those 2 projects have huge operational costs to be run, so consider making a donation to keep them making the world a better place ( Wikimedia foundation Donation Link, Metabrainz Foundation Donation Link).

Dear Music lovers, today it’s a special day for Volumio and all of us.

The Volumio team is proud to present you MyVolumio.

MyVolumio is the brainchild of a dream we had since few years: emancipate our beloved Volumio Audiophile player from being just accessible on the local network, and make it communicate with the world out there.
To make what, you might be asking.

To extend Volumio capabilities. To make Volumio smarter. To make Volumio better in new ways, and most important: to make ourselves enjoy more our music.

So, let’s go straight to the point: we’ve been working hard for almost 2 years to make something which we think will evolve Volumio by a great shot.

And guess what, we called it MyVolumio because we have plenty of creativity, and we wanted to be truly yours, Volumio user.

WHAT IS MYVOLUMIO

In a nutshell, myVolumio is:

– A premium paid subscription service which extends Volumio’s capabilities
– It’s available in 3 tiers: free, Virtuoso and Superstar
– It’s not mandatory, and never will be, to enjoy Volumio (which will remain free and open source)
– Awesome

You will be able to access MyVolumio directly from Volumio’s Web Interface or by navigating to myvolumio.org

WHY WE MADE MYVOLUMIO

It always felt to us that Volumio needed an evolutionary leap: it’s just great, but it could have been better with a Cloud Service supporting it, allowing it to integrate smoothly with online and cloud music service. Let’s face it: this is where digital music is going.

Music in increasingly dematerializing and it’s getting more and more fragmented into a plethora of online services, and a Music Player which has some ambitions must be capable of fetching every kind of music from every kind of service.

Then, the way we currently use Volumio, via browser from a local network is great. We imagined that it could have been even better, for example by allowing control of it even without being connected to your home network, or from anywhere you are.

Last, the single most requested features were streaming services support like QOBUZ and Tidal, and we simply could not have been able to deliver them without a wider approach which involved some additions to Volumio as we know it.

HOW DOES MYVOLUMIO WORK

Basically, you will be able to crete an account on MyVolumio (like you do with every other service in the world) which will allow you to experience some pretty good stuff nicely integrated in your Volumio player.

After you created your account, MyVolumio can be accessed in 2 ways: directly from the Volumio UI or via myvolumio.org . You will retain the same functionalities in both modes, and when you’re not connected to your network you can access MyVolumio (and your associated devices) from Myvolumio.org.

That’s it.

You’ll notice a profile tab on the usual settings menu, and by going to your profile you can choose which device to connect, edit your profile settings or upgrade your subscription in any moment.

From there, you will be able to subscribe on our 3 subscription tiers, which offer different levels of features:

FREE
That’s your entry point here, feel free to look around and experiment. By signing in for the free account you will be part of the family, and we’re working hard to bring some cool feature for the free tier as soon as possible (suggestions are very welcome).

VIRTUOSO
That’s where it gets interesting: you get the full MyVolumio experience for one device. We expect this to be the ideal choice for all of you which have only one Volumio player, but want more from it.

SUPERSTAR
It can’t get any better. You get the full MyVolumio experience (same features as the Virtuoso plan) but for up to 6 devices together, which you can use at the same time. So if you’re like me and you’ve basically a Volumio player in every corner of the house, you will be able to control them all from one convenient place.

As you will read later, we are releasing MyVolumio initially as an Open Beta, to gather your feedback and to make it ready for prime time.

This gives also us a chance to show you what we have in mind and what can be achieved with it. Let’s view what MyVolumio introduces:

STREAMING SERVICES SUPPORT

The single most asked question has been: when do we get other streaming services support (namely TIDAL and QOBUZ). Well, we’ve worked really hard since day 1 of Volumio2 development to bring such functionalities.
It turned out to be an extremely complex task, due to legal requirements and technical challenge. So the only way we could make it happen has been creating a cloud service to support them. This is in fact, how we started working on what has later become MyVolumio. So yes, we’ve laid the groundwork for every major streaming service support. And the good news is that we have a great one from day 1.

QOBUZ VOLUMIO INTEGRATION IS AVAILABLE WITH MYVOLUMIO

We’ve worked closely with QOBUZ to make it happen, and we finally made it. I must admit it has not been easy in the beginning, but in the process I really saw the tremendous improvement this Music Service has done over the last year and I am pretty sure it will become the first choice of many.

What I really love about QOBUZ is their editorial selection (which is beautifully presented in MyVolumio). It’s definitely a great way to discover music, for all tastes. Well done on that.

Last but not least, directly from MyVolumio you can receive a 30 days free trial from QOBUZ, so you don’t have more excuses for not trying it.

REMOTE VOLUMIO CONTROL

And when I say remote, I mean it. With MyVolumio you can add as much as 6 Volumio players into a single account, and control them directly even if you’re not connected to your home network. Even if you’re not in the same city.
Even from a different continent (yeah, that’s not quite useful I know).

But this is a great advantage if you want to have all your playback endpoints available in a single glance without messing with IP address or network issues.
Not to mention that we use an end-to-end encrypted connection, so you get a pretty big bonus in security.

MYVOLUMIO ROLLOUT MASTERPLAN

As I already anticipated, we are relesing MyVolumio as an Open Beta, until we hammer it to perfection. This is our plan:

Phase 1: Open Beta

Even if we worked on MyVolumio for more than 18 months as of now, we need to make sure everything runs as good as our community deserves. This means addressing every possible residual misbehavior MyVolumio has.
So, we decided to relase MyVolumio initially as an Open Beta to validate our Cloud infrastructure, to see how well it performs under reasonable loads and to make it as stable as possible.

As some of you know, Volumio counts about 150k users: and serving such a potentially wide crowd is something to be taken seriously. Phasing out the load our infrastructure is the soundest choice to get us prepared for the big show.

This is why we deiced to release MyVolumio in this Open Beta stage. What it means is:
– We will provide a limited amount of Voucher codes for people to try it for free. We will offer about 50 voucher codes every week to gradually increase the load on the system. This does not mean that this beta is closed: everyone can subscribe to MyVolumio service, but we want to offer the possibility to enjoy it for free to our community members, while they are willing to give us a hand by reporting suggestions, feedbacks and bug reports. Voucher codes have a limited duration of 2 months.

– We are starting with a limited set of functionalities, in order to perfect them and focus on having few but robust additional features. Namely:

– Secure Remote connection from anywhere to your Volumio player.
– Full QOBUZ support

We will be adding in this phase also:
– Automatic syncing and backup of Favourites, My Webradios, WebRadio Favourites and Playlists
– Another very famous Hi-Res Streaming service (it ends with L) integration

Last but not least, we want to listen to what our beloved community has to say about this work we’ve been doing behind the curtains for so long. Our vision is to create a set of cloud-based additional features that improve the listening experience with Volumio, and we’re eager to know if we actually made something relevant for you guys.

Before focusing on moving forward with more functions, we want to know if this is a good direction or if there is something we should reconsider, and how.
The single most important feature that MyVolumio is asked to serve is to improve the experience of people like us, who just love to listen and discover exciting music. We’ve done our part, now it’s your time to say what you think about it.

You can leave your feedbacks in the MyVolumio Feedback thread

This initial Phase will last for likely a couple of months, and we will then progress to official release, expansion and community driven development. More info on the MyVolumio 101 thread.

Last, but not least we want to make it very clear that Volumio is and will remain always free and Open Source.

MyVolumio is a set of additional premium capabilities which are not mandatory at all to enjoy Volumio.
We will retain all current features as Free and Open, and we will also add new one in this scheme. In parallel, we will be adding new and new features to MyVolumio.

It’s very important to note that if you love the Volumio project, MyVolumio is the perfect way to sustain it financially, and get a pretty good features bonus in return.

If you’re still here after this huge post, then it means you really want to try MyVolumio! During the Beta Stage we will offer special MyVolumio images for download, which are separate from Volumio standard release cycle. You can find all the informations on the following link:

But now here they are: and as always Allo made it just right. Not only the look really cool, but you can customize them by choosing the color and the standoff colors.

Of course, the cases are compatible with the whole Allo product range:

  • Raspberry Pi + BOSS
  • Raspberry Pi + BOSS + Volt
  • Raspberry Pi + Kali + Piano
  • Raspberry Pi + Kali + Piano 2.1

So, no further talks! You can get yours HERE!

Dear Friends,

I’m proud to announce a new version of Volumio Audiophile Music Player. The development of this new release is including some contributions by Volumio’s users. This is the very first good news, and it seems really important to me to thank all the people who submitted bug reports, code, suggestions and improvements. The community is a key part in what Volumio is now, and you guys are definetely supporting it in a smart and passionate way. Thanks for that.
And now, let’s see what this new version brings to Volumio:

    • UPNP \ DLNA Control Capability: Now you can control Volumio via a UPNP \ DLNA client. That means that you can stream music to your Hi-Fi setup via your smartphone, Smart-TV, Tablet, PC and much more devices. You can also use UPNP clients as an alternative to Volumio’s WebUI. I’m using it with BubbleUPNP, an excellent Android APP. Just select Volumio from Available UPNP devices (make sure you’re connected to the same network) and hit play on your favourite tunes. This was made possible by integrating an excellent MPD add-on: Upmpdcli by Hiéro. It works flawlessly with Volumio, even if you’re already playing your local Music.

Upmpdcli Volumio

  • Improved Airport performances: you’ll find latest Shairport Version, which will better integrate into Volumio. Now you can start Airplay playback even in playback mode, the system will simply switch to Airport. Also, you can output Airport playback on your desired DAC, just select it in output device and you’re good to go.
  • Browse your DLNA\UPNP Music: you can activate UPNP \ DLNA music indexing, just go to settings, and activate the UPNP indexing service. This will index all the tunes served by DLNA Servers. This is not enabled by defaults, since it will take a lot of time to Volumio to index all your tunes.
  • Features management: Want to obtain the best from your Volumio setup and disable unneeded services? Here you are, in the system tab you’ll find an handy services selector.

  • Library Browsing Tab: For those of you who just miss a complete overview of their library, divided by genres, artists and so on Volumio’s community member Jotak developed this UX refinement. Ça va sans dire, a valuable addition. Plus you’ll find some other UX improvements.

    Volumio-library

  • System stability improved: Now Volumio will almost failure proof. I’ve integrated several stability fixes, and now the system checks periodically its status, and if something goes wrong it just returns to normal operating conditions. Plus I’ve addressed some ALSA bugs, which for example was setting output device to mute. No need to log in with SSH, it just works.
  • I2S DACs compatibility out of the box: thanks to Raspberry PI’s I2S DACs we can reach our Audiophile heaven with very few bucks. Volumio is compatible with the most famous ones: Hifiberry, Hifiberry DIGIRASPYPLAY3, RPI-DAC and IQ-AUDIO. Just plug your I2S friend on your PI and activate its driver from the Menu. After a reboot your PI will be singing like never before. Want to use the brand new Wolfson Audio Card? Even if it is not officially supported as of now, there’s an easy procedure to make it work with Volumio.

  • Cubietruck Porting completed: finally, all those waiting for their Cubie to sing, the time has come. I’ve complete the porting (which was quite challenging…) and I’ll upload the image in the next days.

All Volumio supported platforms will receive 1.4 Update in the next week. You can check at the Download section and grab your favourite Audiophile Music Player. Enjoy!

Volumio for Cubox-i has been released https://volumio.com/volumio-cubox-i-released/ https://volumio.com/volumio-cubox-i-released/#respond Tue, 18 Feb 2014 20:29:20 +0000 https://new.volumio.org/?p=956 Solidrun was the very first Firm who believed in us, and let me tell you: what a product they made!

Solidrun was the very first Firm who believed in us, and let me tell you: what a product they made!

Let’s face it: after the little Pi, the market is literally flooded with embedded single-board computers. That’s really good, because we can just choose the best one to fit our needs. But as a side effect, we just have too many to compare!
Now, let me be a little sentimental, for once: I just love Solidrun, they are the first firm we contacted back in the days of RaspyFi, and they believed a lot in RaspyFi’s (and Tsunamp\Volumio) vision. Besides that, what really matters is that the little Cubox is an awesome machine, packed in an incredible tiny form factor. That’s why I was mutually convinced we were going to see exciting stuff with SolidRun products.

CuBox-iThe new Cubox-i especially delivers lots and lots and lots of processing power, has plenty of connectivity and features also an optical S\pdif output. The range of cubox-i enables you to have a perfect Volumio companion which has the following key-points:

  • Unprecedented WAF
  • Up to 2gb of RAM, enjoy RAMPLAY as long as you wish
  • Wi-Fi connectivity, on some models
  • S\pdif out: for those of you who need that, no more converters
  • E-sata connector
  • IR remote receiver for LIRC fanatics

So, I’m very pleased to announce that Volumio for Cubox-i has been released, it is also compatible with the upcoming HummingBoard, and it features the latest updates both to WebUi and System. The combo Volumio + Cubox-i runs pretty well, it has an astonishing 20 seconds boot time, and the system is smooth and doesn’t have problems with big res files. Furthermore, it sounds awesome! (to find out some more, just scroll a bit…)

So, cubox-i owners and wannabe ones: to enjoy that, just download it here

Side note: I’m more and more convinced that Freescale’s Imx6 (the platform on which Cubox-i, UDOO and Compulab Utilite are based on) is the one which achieves the best audible performances. Of course, there are lots of factors involved in SQ, like the implementation and boards layouts. But I can feel that Imx6 products are somehow better sounding than competitors. Before you think I’m gone mad, I made also some measurements (jitter and integer resolution) which have confirmed this thought.
I could just suspect there are some bus optimizations that made this possible, or that 3.0.35 Freescale’s mainline kernel (all 3 boards use this older kernel, which is the only current supported one) is just better in audio related tasks. Furthermore, digging into kernel optimization, I found out that Imx6 features Hardware DSP support… Could be a clue…
Anyway, I’m just collecting my ideas on that, you’ll read a more exaustive article on the matter when I’ll have better assumptions to support my thoughts…

Let’s talk about that on Volumio’s Forum!
